Match no.1 – CSK VS RCB : Low score haunts RCB

Build up

10 months since Chennai Super Kings made a remarkable return to the Indian Premier League by winning the title, here we are, back in their den, to kickstart season number 12 of this iconic competition.

No other domestic competition in this sport grabs eyeballs as much as the IPL does. This time, the tournament is seeing an early start as well. Kids are happy as well coz their board exams are completed, Yeahhhh.

Is anyone complaining? I don’t think so. This is afterall, the biggest carnival in the cricketing calendar every year.

It is the clash of the two biggest stars in Indian cricket at the moment. Virat Kohli vs MS Dhoni one more time.

The defending champions Chennai Super Kings take on Royal Challengers Bangalore.

CSK have had the edge over RCB most of the time, enjoying a superior head-to-head record.

Will that change tonight? You bet.

The onus will be on Kohli and AB de Villiers once again and this time, they have added Shimron Hetmyer to the mix.If the pitch assist spin then it is going to be a cakewalk for dhoni’s army.

But remember, they were already called as the dad’s army last year and now, they have returned one year older. Can they replicate their feats? We will get a fair idea tonight. Welcome to the blog for the tournament opener.

Toss – CSK opt to bowl

MSD isn’t sure about the wicket so it’s no surprise that he wants to bowl first. CSK are playing only three overseas players. That’s no surprise considering the south african paw Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the tournament. They don’t have Faf du Plessis as well so expect Ambati Rayudu to open the innings today. RCB on the other hand have picked Moeen Ali, AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer and Colin de Grandhomme as their four overseas players.

Chennai Super Kings (Playing XI): Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Harbhajan Singh, Imran Tahir

Royal Challengers Bangalore (Playing XI): Parthiv Patel(w), Virat Kohli(c), Moeen Ali, AB de Villiers, Shimron Hetmyer, Shivam Dube, Colin de Grandhomme, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Navdeep Saini

Match begins

Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel comes to crease.

Kohli falls

Massive wicket! He was getting frustrated! The pitch is already on the slower side and Kohli is gone. He takes on Harbhajan’s short delivery but the pull shot falls straight into the hands of Jaddu at deep midwicket. Moeen Ali is in at number 3.

Another one

Wow, this pitch is turning already and no wonder RCB are in trouble! Bhajji is having a fantastic day. This one has stopped on the batsmen and also turned a bit. Moeen tried to place it on the leg but could only get a leading edge back to bowler. AB is the new man in. He has to bat deep. RCB have made 33 in the powerplay.

Overs-6- 33/2

Youh have got to be kidding me! AB de Villiers is much better than this. He first gets a top edge which Imran Tahir spills but then off the very next delivery, AB throws it away by attempting a lame pull. Considering the state of the game, you wouldn’t expect AB to play such a stroke. RCB are in deep deep trouble!hetmyer come in to bat.

Oh my god Unbelievable!

What exactly is happening here?

RCB are choking at the Chepauk. Hetmyer would have been run out already without facing a ball but he got through that moment. And then he makes another wrong judgement by attempting a quick single hitting the ball straight to Raina.

You can’t take a single when ball is straight to raina or jaddu unless of course you’re speedster MSD.

Parthiv denies the single but Hetmyer is almost halfway down the track already and has to depart. This is unbelievable cricket!

Tahir gets the man!

Just two balls and Imran Tahir strikes! The debutant Shivam Dube fails to read the googly and edges it to Watson at slip. RCB are sinking! 49/5 at the halfway mark.

Overs-10- 49/5

De grandhomme departs

If Kohli, AB and Moeen can fail on this surface, then you cannot expect more from someone like Colin de Grandhomme whose strength isn’t spin. Jadeja bowls it quick and still manages to turn to get an outside edge off de Grandhomme’s bat. RCB are six down.

A googly a day keeps the batsman away !!!!!!

It is a piece of cake for someone like Imran Tahir. All he has to do is pitch it on the right areas. He bowls another googly this time and Saini gets an inside onto the pad which is then caught by Watson at slip. Tahir thinks the batsman should be given out lbw. Dhoni challenges the umpire’s decision and it is overturned. RCB lose number 7 now.

Tahir gets another

Another googly and another wicket! Chahal actually connects this well but the fielder is stationed at deep midwicket. He hits it straight to Harbhajan, who has had a great game so far. 8 down for 59.

Parthiv survives

Parthiv Patel has been waging a lone battle at one end and now CSK want to get rid of him. Jadeja raps him on the pad but the umpire says not out. Dhoni goes for the review and the umpire was right with his call. The ball was going over the stumps.

RCB are 66 for 8 after 15 overs. Can Parthiv do something extraordinary here and take them to 100?

Nine down

Umesh played for the turn but Jaddu didn’t get any and it went straight through to knock the stumps. RCB are 70/9

RCB bundles out for 70

Bravo comes into the attack, bowls a slower delivery and Parthiv pulls it straight to the fielder. It’s all over. RCB are all out for 70.

Opinion time

Yes, CSK bowled to their strengths, RCB batted poorly but how about the pitch? This is certainly not the pitch we wanted to see on the opening day of the tournament. What do you guys think?

The chase begins

Shane watson and ambati rayudu comes to the crease.

Watto falls

He was struggling tonight. He was on 0 off 10 in the final last year and went onto score a century but tonight, Watson is dismissed for a duck. Chahal is happy. He goes through the defence.

Raina starts with a bang

CSK have been calm until now weathering the early storm on this tricky surface but Raina has decided to take on Moeen now. He has hammered him for successive boundaries to make sure there is no pressure on the batting side in the second half of the chase.

5000 runs for Raina

Chepauk is cheering! Suresh Raina becomes the first batsman in IPL history to get to 5000 runs. What a performer he has been in this competition right from the very first season.

Highest run scorer of the IPL:

Moeen ali strikes!

Raina wants to finish this but couldn’t clear the man at the boundary. Moeen Ali gets a wicket. Kedar Jadhav is the new man in. CSK need 31 to win.

Cleaned him up!

Rayudu steps down the track to Siraj but fails to judge the bounce here. He wants to leave the ball but it hits the stumps anyway. The crowd erupts expecting Dhoni to come out but its Jadeja.

Absolutely ruthless

Definitely the most boring match ever to kickstart an IPL campaign.

But CSK must be very happy with their performance.

RCB will have hell lot work to do if they have to be on a winning side.

Standout bowling performance:

Harbhajan Singh was called on to bowl the second over of the match. The off-spinner bowled the right pace and leaving it to do its bit off the surface.

With runs coming in trickles, a frustrated Virat Kohli attempted to break the momentum, only managing to hit a flighted Harbhajan Singh delivery as far as Jadeja at deep midwicket. In his third over, the off-spinner bowled slower through the air and accepted a return catch that came off the leading edge of Moeen Ali’s bat – the batsman guilty of working against the spin on this occasion. In his final over, Harbhajan accounted for the wicket of AB de Villiers – caught on the midwicket boundary.

The 38-year old – who did not concede a boundary in his entire spell – had bowled out in the eighth over, returning impressive figures of 4-0-20-3.

Stat of the Match:

-The RCB innings was only the second time in the IPL that the spinners had picked up 8 wickets in an innings; the only other occasion was when the CSK spinners took eight wickets against the Deccan Chargers in 2012.

-128 of the 209 deliveries bowled in the match were dot deliveries .

-CSK’s win in Chennai is their 7th consecutive win over RCB.

Brief Scores:

Chennai Super Kings: 71-3 in 17.4 overs (Ambati Rayudu 28) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore: 70 all out in 17.1 overs (Parthiv Patel 29, Harbhajan Singh 3-20, Imran Tahir 3-9) by 7 wickets.

Man of the Match:

Harbhajan Singh, for his match-winning spell of 4-0-20-3.
